The aim of Coorie Creative is to support long term survivors of trauma or loss, or people who are at risk of social isolation. The organisation offers creative therapeutic sessions at their studio in Stirling, centred around yarn-based craft, specifically weaving, knitting and crochet. Suitable for complete beginners, with an inclusive and supportive atmosphere, previous feedback indicates a fun, informal day of making, enhancing wellbeing and boosting self esteem, with a beautiful handmade piece to take home. The looms are suitable for all ages and abilities and the premises are fully accessible.
Registered as a CIC in 2019, Coorie Creative is now seeking full charitable status for the social mission. Initially starting from an incubator pod in Made in Stirling, the organisation grew quickly, resulting in a need for their own premises. After a short spell at STEP, they now occupy a shop and studio in the Thistle Centre in Stirring, in the old café space next to Primark, for a period of at least three years. The organisation is run by Dr Mairi Breslin, previously a trauma psychologist based at the University of Stirling. During lockdown, the organisation moved classes and support online and now offers online weaving and craft courses, supported by a private Facebook group and regular live events.
